Big Betsy

Today Craig and I were going to go fishing. It was his idea. We bought a new tinny last weekend and we were keen to take it for a spin.

“Hey Jimmy let’s grab those big rods like we’re going to catch big Betsy!” exclaimed Craig. “Alright let’s do it and start to get cooking,” I told Craig. I had a feeling that we were going to catch something today.

After grabbing the rods, I ran over to the fridge and grabbed the bait we needed to make the catch today. It took a while but once I got the bait we were ready to go. Craig loved to drive so he drove us down to the shore of our local beach. Once we got there, we unloaded the boat and started to make our way into the waters.

Craig and I sat talking to each other with a rod in our hands we waited for the bites to come. “I bet I’ll get the first bite Jimmy,” Craig said to me. I just ignored him and then I started to get a bite on my rod. “We must have the wrong rods Jimmy. I must have yours,” Craig said. We switched rods and Craig started to reel in the fish. It was a small Mackrell and we chucked it back in after catching it.

It was a bit of a windy day today here on the waters, But something happened that blew me away. A large wave came out of nowhere and dropped a whole bunch of fish into our boat. The fish were up to our ankles and you couldn’t see the bottom of the boat anymore.

“Woohoo!” exclaimed Craig. He seemed really happy at the wave of fish that fell into our boat. There were a variety of fish that landed in our boat and we were going to keep most of them, but another wave made its way towards us. I couldn’t see much but there was definitely a large shark of some-kind in that wave. Was this big Betsy?

The wave hit our boat with what appeared to be big Betsy and our tinny turned right over. We capsized like a small toy boat in a bathtub. Under the water, I watched big Betsy take away all of the fish except for one that was stuck on the boat. Craig and I turned the boat back over and crawled back into the boat.

“I’m done Jimmy,” said Craig. He didn’t look as happy now. “It’s alright Craig we’ll keep this one fish and how about that, I think we saw big Betsy,” I told Craig. He nodded his head and said we should head back to shore so we did.

Fishing is something that takes practice and patience. Craig and I headed back home and had 2 minute beef noodles and celebrated catching the fish we did. It was going to be something we cooked up for dinner that night, But we got to see big Betsy and all those fish up to our ankles. You can’t deny that that’s an experience and even if we didn’t get many fish it was still fun. They do say it’s about the journey not the destination.
